February Meeting Report

February 24, 2011

Our second meeting was a hit! Seven members attended: Suzanne Bringhurst, Jamie Frischknecht, Sherry White, Lynette Lawson, Lorraine Peck, Amy Tams, and Jessica Anderson. We especially appreciate Suzanne stepping in to be the hostess at the last minute. Her chocolate chip cookies were delicious, and she lead the discussion like a pro!

We had a very thoughtful discussion of Chains. It received a solid 4 stars (out of 5) from each reader at the meeting. Some of the topics discussed: treatment of slaves, new things we learned about the Revolutionary War, and the irony of a nation full of slaveholders seeking freedom from a “tyrant” that merely overtaxed them.

After the discussion of Chains, we talked about other books we’ve been reading. I’ve listed below the ones I managed to jot down, just for fun.

  • Silas Marner, by George Eliot (a recent favorite read of Suzanne’s)
  • Sarah’s Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay (Jamie just started this one)
  • Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott (Lynette is reading this for the first time)
  • I Capture the Castle, by Dodie Smith (Amy liked, but didn’t love, this one)
  • Persuasion, by Jane Austen (Sherry just reread this Austen favorite)
  • Philippa Gregory (Lorraine has been reading historical novels by this prolific writer)
  • The Five People You Met in Heaven, by Mitch Albom (Jessica gave this a rating of “meh”)

We also exchanged ideas and suggestions for books for children of various ages, chatted quite a bit about The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, and noted that Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte is being adapted again.

What have you been reading?
